12-years-old Abhimanyu Mishra becomes youngest grandmaster in chess history

12-years-old Indian-origin American Abhimanyu Mishra has created history by breaking the 19 years old record becoming the youngest-ever chess grandmaster in the world. Abhimanyu scored his third GM norm in Budapest, having already crossed the required 2500 Elo rating barrier.

Abhimanyu broke GM Sergei Karjakin’s 19-years record. In 2002, Karjakin was 12 years and 7 months old when he won the grandmaster title. Born on 5 February 2009, Mishra took 12 years, 4 months to achieve the highest title in chess by defeating the 15-year-old Indian GM Leon Luke Mendonca. He achieved this position in the ongoing grandmaster tournament in Budapest, Hungary.

A chess site has shared the news through their official twitter handle that read, “It’s over and US chess prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra has broken Sergey Karjakin’s record to become a grandmaster at the age of 12 years, 4 months and 25 days, beating Karjakin by over 2 months!”

In November 2019, Abhimanyu (10 years, 9 months) became the youngest international master in the world. To become a grandmaster, 100 ELO points and 3 GM norms are required. In 2021, Abhimanyu achieved his first GM norm in April , second GM norm in May and become a grandmaster by achieving the third GM norm in Budapest tournament.

The site has also shared that chess is a game for all ages. Recently, 88-year-old Salvador Diaz Carias from Venezuela got his FIDE Master (FM) title.
